House of Colour is NOT built (but rather limits the ability for franchisees) to scale, drive profitable revenue, support the success of new franchisees, or offer best-in-class makeup products to clients.
- The American leadership team is friendly - The drapes are well-made - The size of the training cohorts
- The communication and education around compliance, standards, and how to uphold the manual are abysmal. Everything around related to that department is hidden, misinformed, and lacks proper education or training. This lack of clarity around what is and is not allowed for franchise operations drastically impacts the profitability and limits the ability to expand/scale the business. - The required POS and scheduling system that was built in-house is horrible, limited, and prevents efficient operations for franchises and their teams. - The limited options for makeup colors that we are allowed to sell to clients. There should be more options and variety to make for a great customer experience so that we can sell more product and be competitive with other beauty product brands. I lose sales and customers because there's gaps in makeup shades. - We do not have an assigned account manager that's accessible by phone for questions, coaching, and support in the first year of business. This is a unique timeframe with challenges that require specific attention to set up for long-term success and it makes the onboarding process difficult as a new franchisee to have to figure it out on your own.
NoNegativeApprovesThe training was lacking in both color and style, especially for working with diverse clients. Product education was minimal, and communication with corporate is frustrating. I’ve had to seek outside resources to confidently offer services. Support fell short of expectations.
I like the concept of offering color and style services.
While I appreciate the intention behind the franchise model, my experience with training and ongoing support has been disappointing. The color and style training provided was simply not sufficient to confidently serve a diverse range of clients. We were not equipped with adequate resources to drape a variety of skin tones with confidence, nor were we thoroughly trained on the products we’re expected to sell. The same goes for style—while we were given a basic framework, it lacked the depth and substance required to conduct a truly professional style analysis. As a result, I’ve had to invest in multiple external courses and read extensively outside the system just to feel prepared and knowledgeable. Additionally, communication with corporate has been frustrating. The generic info@ email address rarely leads to helpful resolutions, and navigating questions or concerns often feels like hitting a wall. Overall, the experience has not lived up to the level of support and professionalism I expected when joining a franchise. I hope to see more robust training, resources, and communication systems in place for future consultants.
NoNegativeNeutralOverall, I am extremely satisfied with HOC and I’m grateful that I have chosen this franchise/business model
I feel like I have been thoroughly trained. I like that we are the top notch company in color analysis. I do feel supported from corporate and training. I love the relationships that I have built with fellow consultants.
I don’t like how one person from corporate will tell you one thing and someone else will tell you something different. However, I do know that they are trying very hard to streamline information so I appreciate the effort to improve
YesPositiveApprovesThere is no way to communicate with corporate. Only a general email that auto-responds or sends canned responses. Little to no support and immense amount of emails changing systems and processes causing low confidence in leadership model. Training team has turned over many times
Profitable to an extent - they are increasing royalties and adding fees so that will change I am sure
No way to communicate with corporate. No phone number only a general email which takes sometimes weeks to hear back from.
NoNegativeDisapprovesHOC has been great, but their inability to see the industry changing and getting deeper than we offer is frustrating as an owner. I wouldn't recommend entering at this stage.
Helping others.
Inefficient in-house technology with subpar capabilities and la ack of efficiency.
