Introduction to Bach

Oct 1, 20236 weeks

The aim of this course is to introduce you to the technical and theoretical skill sets required to play classical solo piano pieces at all levels. You should ideally have some musical background but not necessarily on the piano. Your previous background with music theory is crucial to your success. If this is the case, you are already halfway to becoming a pianist. If you are completely new to piano, this course includes suggested theory readings which we strongly encourage you to review. This course is designed under the guidance of accredited, concert-level pianists with distinguished, international backgrounds. It is not meant to be easy, but it is designed to be approachable. Your journey of discovering the power of classical piano begins here. Course Requirements: A tuned piano (if digital, make sure the keys are weighted) Camera External microphone Wired headphones Web browser (ideally through a desk or laptop) An incessant desire to practice

  • Week 1

    Sep 25, 2023 - Oct 1, 2023Bach: Prelude and Fugue in C major, BWV 846:

What better way to begin your piano journey than with Bach's most popular prelude. This easier piece will demonstrate to you the power of Bach's musical breakthroughs with melody and harmony. Taking advantage of its simplicity, this prelude will allow us to explore wrist movements, balance, volume, and tone.

  • Week 2

    Oct 2, 2023 - Oct 8, 2023Chopin: Nocturne No. 20 in C-Sharp Minor:

As you continue to harness the knowledge gained from your work with Part 1's Prelude, Chopin's more challenging yet approachable nocturne will introduce you to the geography of the piano. Your hands will gain experience playing a greater number of octaves as you ensure a balanced sound between both hands. The complex nature of the piece will open up a discussion on momentum, space, time, and yes, physics!

  • Week 3

    Oct 9, 2023 - Oct 15, 2023Scales

You will hear many piano teachers expressing their disdain against learning the scales. Not us. We believe that playing the scales perfectly is of utmost importance to your success. The strength of your fingers, wrists, hands, the speed, the accuracy, and the dynamics of your piano playing will improve significantly. A thorough comprehension of all 24 scales (major and minor keys) is provided. Includes our exclusive technical videos.

  • Week 4

    Oct 16, 2023 - Oct 22, 2023Touching Base with Theory

This will include a list of shorter, easier piano pieces for extra (and required) practice outside of the main pieces.

  • Week 5

As a special feature of this exclusive course, you are entitled to 3 private sessions with one of our master level teachers. Choose from our catalogue of dozens of classical music pieces.
